The History of the USPTA

Jun 24, 2016 by

The USPTA (United States Professional Tennis Association) is one of the largest parts of the tennis education industry. USPTA Certified Professionals offer the best tennis coaching around, and it takes a lot of hard work for a instructor to obtain certification. Founded in 1927 by a group of professional players in New York, the original goal of the USPTA was to create a gap between professional instructors and amateur players. The current Mission Statement of the USPTA is “The purpose of USPTA shall be to elevate the standards of tennis-teaching professionals and coaches.” The organization’s name was originally the United States Professional Lawn Tennis Association, but the word “Lawn” was dropped in 1970 due to the lack of use of the term. At that point, the Association had fewer than 1,000 members, but its...

Protect Yourself From the Sun

Jun 24, 2016 by

The warm weather is drawing more people outside to play. While sunlight will help our bones, and boost our spirits, its powerful UV radiation can do some serious damage if you don’t take the proper precautions— especially if you will be playing tennis outside for a few hours.   UV radiation can cause both short-term and long-term skin illnesses. These symptoms are just temporary and can be treated with over-the-counter medication, but each sunburn and heat rash increases the chances of getting melanoma. Melanoma is a type of skin cancer, which can appear as a small freckle at first, but may later grow and change...

History of The Federation Cup

Jun 24, 2016 by

The idea of an international team tennis competition for women was first proposed by Hazel Wightman in 1919. She thought there should be a woman’s equivalent to the Davis Cup, but her idea was rejected. Instead, Wightman presented a trophy in 1923 for an annual women’s tennis contest between the USA and Great Britain. Nell Hopman, wife of the Australian Davis Cup captain Harry Hopman, later advocated for Wightman’s idea. In 1963, the International Tennis Federation, the world governing body of tennis, celebrated its 50th anniversary by establishing the Federation Cup for international women’s competition.   At first, the Federation Cup tournament took place one week every year in a different venue. Despite the lack of prize money, the competition drew teams from 16 countries and was supported by the top players. The first...
